The following is the original version of The Maple Leaf Forever by Alexander Muir; it was written in 1867--the year Canada became a Dominion. It is a piece of Old Canadian music and was more popular among some British Canadians than O Canada (a song that became the anthem.) It wasn't as popular with the French Canadians.
In Days of yore,From Britain's shoreWolfe the dauntless hero cameAnd planted firm Britannia's flagOn Canada's fair domain. Here may it wave,Our boast, our prideAnd joined in love together,The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,The Maple Leaf Forever.[CHORUS]The Maple LeafOur Emblem Dear,The Maple Leaf Forever.God save our Queen and heaven bless,The Maple Leaf Forever. At Queenston Heights and Lundy's LaneOur brave fathers side by sideFor freedom's home and loved ones dear,Firmly stood and nobly died. And so their rights which they maintained,We swear to yield them never. Our watchword ever more shall beThe Maple Leaf Forever[CHORUS]Our fair Dominion now extendsFrom Cape Race to Nootka SoundMay peace forever be our lotAnd plenty a store aboundAnd may those ties of love be oursWhich discord cannot severAnd flourish green for freedom's homeThe Maple Leaf Forever[CHORUS]
